Organization Challenge Week 1: Time Management

Monday February 11, 2008
One of my organization challenge participants inquired about finding the time to get organized amongst a very busy schedule that doesn't allow for a lot of free time. This is a common obstacle for many of us. When we finally have free time, chances are we won't want to spend it doing something less than enjoyable. Getting organized is considered less than enjoyable for most people because until you actually get organized and experience the pleasure of being organized, it is hard to fathom organization as enjoyable. I love organizing, if you haven't noticed, and I cannot imagine being any other way. I admit that during very busy times, I have less time to devote to organization, but because I am already organized, it doesn't require a lot of my time. The truth is, being disorganized takes away from your time . Think about it, how long does it take you to locate your keys, receipts, bills, contact information or even the grocery list? If you were organized and everything was stored in its place, you would find it right away, and save yourself a lot of time!

My challenge for you this week is:

  • Incorporate time management skills by utilizing a personal organizer either on your computer, telephone or paper. Schedule your day's events by the hour and minutes to see where your time is truly being spent.
  • Determine where you can fit in at least 20 minutes a day to devote to organizing.
  • Schedule your organization time in your planner as you woud an appointment. For example: 1pm - 2pm Organize Bedroom Closet.
Please send a comment, email or visit my forum if you need additional time management tips before we start tackling the invidividual areas of organization.

Hi Arnesh,
Thank you for visiting my site! In response to your question, I would suggest reviewing your planner at least twice a day. In the morning to view what needs to be done for the day, and in the evening to confirm that you have completed those tasks, and to add new ones for the following day.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Happy Organizing
