Organization Challenge Week 2: Bedroom Closet

Saturday February 16, 2008
According to my poll on disorganization, our bedroom closets are the most disorganized. And the number one reason is because we are reluctant to get rid of things . As I have said countless times before, If you want to get organized, you must be willing to get rid of the things that serve no purpose other than to create clutter .

There are many advantages to getting rid of things:

  • Create more space: You will have more space in your closet to organize your existing items, and add future purchases.
  • Save you time: You will find items easier then you did when it was cluttered.
  • Discovery: You will find items you forgot you had.
  • Do a good deed: You can donate items to people who are truly in need.
  • Profit: Selling your items will earn you some extra cash.
  • New Wardrobe: You can swap items with friends, and feel like you've acquired a new wardrobe.

There are disadvantages to not getting rid of things:

  • You will remain disorganized.

Your organization challenge is to get rid of things! You must devote at minimum 20 minutes a day to getting rid of things in your bedroom closet. Getting rid of things includes: donating, selling, swapping, or throwing out. Only throw out items that are tattered or stained, otherwise they can be of great use to someone else!
