Organizing with House Plants

Per Usual, Kevin Sharkey (Senior Vice President and Executive Editorial Director, Decorating, and Executive Creative Director, Merchandising for Martha Stewart Living Omninedia, Inc. and most importantly, home improvement blogger) is 10 steps ahead of me on his apartment re-design. Namely, he's already got his plants.  About two weeks ago I stopped into a famous flower shop in my neighborhood  asking about plants that could withstand living in a hot environment (my apartment is desert-like, something I can do little about since I'm subletting). I've finally decided on a hanging plant in my kitchen, one potted plant in my living room and a small bamboo pot in my bathroom.

I've talked about using flowers to help organize your home or office before, but flowers are a fleeting beauty.  Plants have staying power and are therefore a better long term investment. Here's what to look for when choosing plants for an organized home:

  • Add a nice design element, so like Kevin, look for something fairly dramatic.
  • Improve the air quality in your home.
  • Be feng shui-friendly, helping move positive energy around your home.
