Every Wednesday I interview another person about how they stay organized in their closet, kitchen or how they organize their daily routine. Today's subject is Katherine Blocksdorf, About.com's expert on horses. Katherine tries everyday to be a little more organized, efficient and smart. You can follow along at her personal blog or visit her website, About Horses.
(Elizabeth) How long between the time your toes hit the floor and you're at your desk? Which tasks do you do as soon as you wake up? Make coffee? Start working immediately? Read the newspaper? Do you eat breakfast at home or at work?
(Katherine) I start work almost immediately after waking about 6AM. I put out and let in the dogs, get a glass of water and start my computer.
I also like to light some candles if it's still dark when I start. I work until my husband gets up, and we have breakfast together. I like to have something significant done by 9AM.
What's something you already do, or could do the night before, that would make your mornings easier?
My breakfast is planned.
Do you have any hobbies you like to do? How do you fit that into your schedule?
I try to ride my horse at least three times a week. I schedule the times, especially if I have a riding lesson booked. I have to work around when a car is home unless I can jog or bike down if the weather is good. I also sew, and usually do that in the evenings with the TV on.
Do you keep a To Do list? How is it organized? By topic or function (phone, email, errand, etc)
I list the priorities for the week. I use my version of David Allen's GTD.
When do you do your "big thinking" work? And when do you do your mundane, boring task work?
I'm a morning person. I do mundane boring stuff in the evening with the TV on, unless I'm sewing.
What advice would you give someone looking to get more done every day?
Don't forget your plan. I write things down and then forget or lose the list. It's easy to get distracted. And stay off of Facebook. I try to restrict myself to one check-in per day. Because part of my work involves Facebook, I usually break my own rule....
