Personal Organizing: Do you meal plan weekly?

This week is all about meal plans and menu planning.  A few questions:

Do you menu plan?

I decide on Mondays which meals I do not need to make for the week. Then I decide if I'm going to deviate from any of my typical meals that I make all the time and try something new--either something I read about or something I saw online)

How far in advance do you plan?

About 3-4 days, sometimes I meal plan for the entire work week.

Do you think menu planning is a waste of time?  Is is too much work?

As long as I stick to it; if I plan to cook at home, buy the ingredient and then end up at Chipolte, then it was a waste of time and money. I try to keep it flexible. If I do end up at Chipolte for dinner, then I'll probably cook after and bring in the meal for lunch the next day.

Any tips for a better meal plan?

I plan 3-4 meals and then plan in leftovers and days we might not eat at home. I don’t plan specific meals for specific days, but I do look at the weather forecast to see if I’ll want to grill out, or make soup or chili for cool weather, etc. I also try to think of alternate plans for foods I buy, such as a cut of meat or chicken breats (grilled, stir fry, etc.), depending on my energy level and time I have. Now that our kids are grown and on their own, it’s so much easier!

Many, many people have told me how much easier it is once their kids are out of the house!

How do you know what to buy if you don’t know what you’re going to cook? I’ve been planning menus, with and without kids, since I was old enough to cook. I’d waste a lot of food if I didn’t.

I am not sure I understand your question. In the example above, the planning happens on Mondays and then they shop.

Hope that helps.
