Organize it | Your book collection

By April 26, 2013

Follow me on:

More unpacking, more cleaning, and more organizing challenges:  namely, the fact that I am a voracious reader who is currently bookcase-less.  How did this happen? Right before I moved I sold my beloved Pottery Barn Graham Desk and Hutch.  I loved this desk, but it won't match the décor scheme in my new apartment so I found it a good home with a coworker on the Upper West Side.  I loved this bookcase for two reasons:

  1. It was gorgeous!
  2. It was the perfect amount of space for my books.

The latter point is the topic of today's post:  How to Organize Your Book Collection.  This desk forced me to donate and swap books constantly because I was completely obsessed with keeping the hutch shelves stocked with the perfect number of books.  Once I went over the limit, I'd list a few books on Paperbackswap.com and ship them off to their new homes one-by-one.

Here is a step-by-step guide to organizing, donating, selling and swapping your books:  How to Organize Your Book Collection in 5 Simple Steps.

As for my new book storage?  I'm considering the West Elm "Parsons" collection in white.  What do you think?  Post your comments below.

How important was adjustable shelving in your search? I’m also in the market for a bookshelf but have so many ‘tall’ photography books that sometimes don’t fit.

That’s a great point – when I was searching I was in serious style-over-substance mode but adjustable shelving is key. If you don’t have the option to adjust shelving, you could lay them sideways and then put one of your framed pictures on top of the pile… And now I’m off to search examples of functional and stylish ways to arrange bigger books.

The West Elm bookshelf looks great. I especially like it’s “lack of a back” which ensures that your room will still look open and spacious. Leaning shelves are also great for this.

Captain, I found a bookcase that may just work for you. Stay tuned to the blog.
