6 Ways to Cut Clutter in Your Bedroom

Ideas, Tasks and Resources to Beat Bedroom Clutter

By

Many will tell you the kitchen is the most important space to keep neat and tidy, but I believe the bedroom is the most important room in your home to keep neat. That's because you do the very important task of sleeping in your bedroom and every article I read about people with sleeping problems contains the phrase "peaceful surroundings." Keeping things neat and tidy is the first step in clearing out clutter and organizing this space. Here are several resources to help you achieve your own peaceful surroundings. Here are 6 ways to cut bedroom clutter:

1. Spend 30 minutes a week decluttering your bedroom

The more often you declutter, the less time it will take. This guide takes you through the motions of decluttering the bedroom step-by-step. First, your closet, then we'll move through your dresser, night table, bureaus and under the bed. My biggest clutter challenge is paper - newspapers, clippings, magazines article and my own notes scattered all over the room. When I declutter the bedroom, I bring in a recycling bin to make sure I get rid of what I've already read. You can tailor your decluttering to your own habits, but this guide will give you a good basic attack plan.

2. Declutter your clothes closet regularly

If you're looking for the biggest clutter culprit in most bedrooms, look no further than the closet. Even if it's often behind closed doors the closet is often teeming with clutter in the form of clothes you no longer wear, and clothes that never quite got back onto the right hanger or into the correct stack on the shelf. A few habits will help this:

  1. Talk the extra 5 seconds to hang your clothes up;
  2. Fold them and put them into the right stack on your shelves
  3. Put dirty clothes into the hamper rather than into an in-between pile on the floor.

Spending a little time on front-end maintenance makes decluttering easier and less time-consuming.

3. Choose the right hamper

The first step in clearing bedroom clutter is to make sure you have a laundry basket in your bedroom. I've found the majority of bedroom clutter is dirty clothes that never made their way to the bathroom hamper. That doesn't mean it needs to literally be a hamper; you can choose something that aligns with your bedroom decor, like a pretty basket or a sleek bin. Then, follow these steps and commit to decluttering regularly to keep your bedroom the peaceful environment it should be.

4. Use trays and bowls to contain clutter

Bedrooms tend to collect a lot of one-off items like watches, earrings, books and knickknacks. Streamline this look by storing jewelry, glasses and books in trays and bowls around your bedroom.

5. Learn the best way to organize a closet

Decluttering is crucial in a small closet. You don't have the luxury of putting something on a shelf you're not sure about because there is no extra self space. This is a good thing because it forces you to make decisions about clothes right away instead of letting them linger for months. Commit to making decisions about your wardrobe up front. Don't put it off til later, because later often doesn't come.

6. Go through the basics of closet organization

Where do I begin? At the beginning. This guide will take you ste-by-step through your closet. You'll find instructions on how to organize, declutter, and create more storage space. The closet may be separated out from the rest of your bedroom because even if it's cluttered, it's behind closed door. But you'll know it's there and that's why it's important to keep it neat and tidy.
