It's great to have a plan to be organized, but planning alone is not enough. Eventually, after all that planning the time will come:
It's the hour or afternoon in your calendar you're scheduled yourself to organize your home. You've got your tools ready, and a basic plan of how to organize. Now what? The key is to stay focused on the task at hand for short bursts of time and not over-tax yourself to the point where you through up your hands and just quit. Slow and steady!
Work in one space at a time.
The most powerful tool is your focus. I’m a wanderer: I like to wander around my home attacked little things that lead me to more little things. I like to do this, but I notice at the end of my wandering, I haven’t really accomplished much. If you really want to get something done, you’ve got to concentrate and focus all of your energy on one space. Start by choosing from the What to Organize A-Z Checklist.
Time Management 101Work in 30 minute increments.
- 30 minutes is manageable. You’re not going to get too fatigued in 30 minutes, which means you’ll reserve enough energy to keep going after a quick break.
- 30 minutes is accessible if you are working on home organization at night, or doing the “weekend warrior” route, by only working on the weekends.
When I took a class last year and started studying for the first time in a decade, I had to begin with 10 minute increments and work my way up to 30. If you’re not at 30 minutes yet, start with 10 and work our way up to 30. Time Management 101

Many experts will tell you to invite a friend over to help you organize your home. Can you imagine going over to someone house to watch them essentially clean their house? No. This is a solo or family-only task, don’t complicate the task by entertaining friends at the same time. You will not be as focused.
Do invite people who also live in your home to help. Chances are they had a hand increasing the disorganization, and will benefit from the new-found order in the home.
