There's a very harrowing moment when you return from vacation that you dread before you even leave your trip. It's the moment you open your email back at work.

How to Organize Email After Vacation

  1. Sort by subject.

    Delete every email except the newest, begin at the bottom and start reading. I like to jot down notes along the way of any questions I have. often they are answered as the email thread goes along.

  2. Sort by person.

    Scan by name and start with the most important person first, whether that be your boss, your boss's boss or most likely, your most important client.

  3. Use the phone.

    Call or flag down your boss and ask "Before I go through my Inbox, is there anything urgent I should start with?" Chances are the most pressing issue the first day you were out on vacation is not as pressing on your return.

  4. Re-think your inbox.

    Take a good, long look at how you organize your emails. After returning from vacation and being out of your inbox, a fresh set of eyes might be able to figure out a better organizing scheme.
