The Best Magazines for Home Organization

Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Martha Stewart Living, and More.

By , About.com Guide

The best magazines for home organization will inspire you. Getting your monthly Real Simple in the mail will give you a temporary jolt to get moving on organization--kind of like a fitness magazine, reading about and gazing at pictures of people eating healthfully and exercising inspires you to do the same. If only for a day.

The important thing to remember is that magazines are just magazines-they are not going to get up and start organizing your sock drawer or whisk your kitchen cabinets into shape on their own. What they can do is serve as a monthly reminder to get yourself off the couch and into your closet.

Martha Stewart Living Magazine

Martha's flagship magazine incorporates so many topics: cooking, baking, decorating, crafting and my favorite category, "homekeeping." Homekeeping is a cross between cleaning and organizing and Martha Stewart Living does a wonderful job of making these mundane tasks look really luxurious-lots of beautiful photography and very articulate-yet-calming writing. Someone once commeted to me that they find everything "Martha" very calming--everything has it's place in her world which is at the heart of home organization.

Real Simple Magazine

Over the years Real Simple has evolved into a lifestyle magazine more than straight home improvement. The majority of the magazine now focuses on hair, clothes and make up. However, you will still find organizing tips--I found a great primer on organizing a garage recently—and product reviews.

Good Housekeeping Magazine

I think Good Housekeeping was probably the first magazine I ever read. My Mom was a subscriber and each month I’d read her copy as soon as she was done.  Apart form the boring, kiss-kiss celebrity interviews, Good Housekeeping keeps true to its name—you will find practical, simple home improvement guides, reviews of cleaning products and several stories relating to home organization.
