How To Organize Junk Drawers

Junk can add up!

As organized as I claim to be, I have a junk drawer. We use this drawer to temporary toss our junk somewhere, with the intention of dealing with it or using it at another time. The problem is, we usually never get to that point of determining whether we should toss it, or use it. This is how the junk drawer develops and accumulates. You can get this drawer organized by utilizing these simple steps: discarding, compartmentalize and practice.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 1-2 hours

Here's How:

  1. Discard your junk:
Completely empty your junk drawer. If it is truly junk, toss it (irreparable condition). If it is an item that can be utilized by someone else, donate it.

  2. Compartmentalize: Keeping items separated in storage containers will make it easier to locate and put back your items.

    • Invest in drawer storage containers: They are very affordable, and necessary to keep your stuff organized.

    • Store like items together in the same container: For example, craft supplies in one container and writing supplies together in another container.

    • Storage Lids: The benefit to buying storage with lids is that you can label the top of the lid with the items contained. Conversely, storage without lids allows you to access your items quicker. Choose the option that works best for you!

  3. Practice:
The reason we consistently keep our junk drawers disorganized, is because we are used to it. Your goal is to become un-used to it. By practicing to put things back in their designated place, eventually it will become automatic.
